Black hole of Calcutta|You must have heard about the black hole of space, but do you know about the 'Black Hole of Calcutta'? Very few people will know about it. Although those who are interested in history, they will definitely know about this incident. This is a shocking incident of Indian history, about which we are going to tell you today.

In fact, a small room at 'Fort William' in Kolkata is buried with a creepy secret of history. Fort William is a fort built in Kolkata on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, which was built during the British Raj. It was built in the name of King William III of England. There is a big ground in front of it, which is part of the fort itself. It is the largest urban park in Kolkata. Apart from this, there is also the historic Victoria Plain in front of this fort.

At present, 'Fort William' is the headquarters of the Eastern Command of the Army. In fact, this fort was built by the 'East India Company' of the British to keep their factories safe, because Siraj-ud-daulah, the Nawab of Bengal, plagued the British in the last decade of the 17th century. A special room of 18 feet long and 14 feet wide was also built in this fort, which was built in about 10 years, which was named 'Black Hole'. Two very small skylights were also made in it and for this reason it was named 'Black Hole'. Although the British had built this room to punish petty criminals, but what did they know that this room would later become their own graveyard.

When 'Fort William' was fully formed, the British started increasing their military power here. When Nawab Siraj-ud-daulah came to know about this, he warned the British not to increase their military power, but they did not pay any special attention to it. Angered by this, on 5 June 1756, Nawab Siraj-ud-daulah set out with a large army to attack Fort William. On 19 June 1756, Nawab Siraj-ud-daulah ascended 'Fort William'.

Since the British did not have that much military power at that time that they could compete with the Nawab's army, some British soldiers had escaped through the waterway before the Nawab arrived. Although around 200 British soldiers led by Commander John Z. Hallwell commanded the fort, they were not much ahead of the Nawab's army. Thus, the Nawab's army created a massive vandalism and on 20 June, 146 British prisoners (including women and children) were locked in the same room 18 feet long and 14 feet wide at Fort William.

On June 23, 1756, when the door of the room was opened, only 23 people were found alive, while 123 people died of suffocation in a closed room. Survivors included English commander John Z. Hallwell. Those who died later were buried in a pit. Today there is a Black Hole Memorial at that place. However, some historians consider this dreadful incident as suspicious.
