Gallstones- Questions & Answers

When cholesterol starts accumulating in our bile, it gets exposed in the form of small stones. This condition is not at all right for our pitta. As soon as you feel that you are facing some symptoms of stones, you should immediately go to the doctor.

What is the importance of pitta for our body

Digestion cannot start without pitta. If you are wondering how? So pay attention. Between the gall bladder and the liver, there is a small drain called the bile duct. This tube serves to transport gall bladder to bile. As food enters the person's body, this drain sends bile to the appropriate part of a small intestine. Digestion starts from here. We need bile juice to digest food, this bile juice is made in the liver and the function of the gall bladder is to store it before the meal, due to which this gall bladder is full before the meal. After a meal, the gall bladder empties completely as the juices stored by it are used to digest the food. Therefore the gall bladder is found below the liver.

How do gallstones form?

When bile juices are unable to empty completely from the gallbladder, these fluids solidify into the gall bladder. When gallstones are born, they are very small in size. But as soon as this stone is not taken care of for a long time, then its size starts increasing very fast. The bigger the size, the more pain and discomfort there will be.

Now here are few common questions which every person must be known for. Lets have the questions series as below.

Question 1. What is gallstone?

Gallstones are the accumulation of the digestive fluid (bile) present in the gallbladder in a solid state. It is a very common disease affecting 10-20% of the general population in India.

Question 2. What are the causes of gallstone formation?

If the excess cholesterol enzymes in the bile present in the gallbladder are not able to dissolve, then it becomes a solid and takes the shape of a stone. Also, if there is too much bilirubin in bile, such as in cirrhosis of the liver or certain blood disorders, it can lead to stone formation. Finally, if the gallbladder does not empty well, it leads to stagnation and stone formation.

Question 3. Are there any risk factors for stone formation?

Gallstones are seen in women over the age of 40. Obesity, sedentary lifestyle, diet high in fat but low in fiber, diabetes and family history of gallstones are some common risk factors.

Question 4. What are the symptoms of gallstones?

Gallstones may not cause any side effects where they are known as quiet or unexpectedly distinguished stones. Otherwise the common symptom is pain in the right side of the abdomen under the side. This pain can be severe and radiate to the back or right shoulder. The patient experiences heaviness in the stomach, nausea and vomiting which gets worse immediately after having a meal. Jaundice or high fever may occur if the stone moves into the bile duct.

Question 5. Who needs treatment for gallstones?

Not everyone needs treatment for stones. Silent stones can be kept under close observation. All other patients who experience symptoms (pain, fever, jaundice, pancreatitis) associated with gallstones should seek medical advice. Individuals and families with a history of gallstones and gall bladder cancer also need treatment.

Question 6. What is the treatment for gallstones?

Gallstones are usually treated surgically in which the gallbladder is removed from the body (cholecystectomy). It is a laparoscopic or keyhole surgery in which the entire procedure is performed through a small hole in the abdomen. No other treatment is usually effective for eliminating gallstones.

Question 7. Can the risk of gallstone formation be reduced?

Yes. Maintaining an appropriate weight is the best way to reduce gallstones. Regular exercise and a low-calorie diet help keep stones away. Avoid not eating food as it increases the chances of stone formation. Also those who intend to lose weight should not do it too fast. Your goal should be to lose 500 grams to 1 kg/week.
